Biography

Mr. Thomas is board certified by the Florida Bar in the area of Labor and Employment law and he served as a member of the Florida Bar Labor and Employment Law Certification Committee for six years from 2002 to 2008. Mr. Thomas has over thirty-five (35) years legal experience.

He is listed in the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers and has received an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell, which is the highest attorney rating awarded. Mr. Thomas is a Master in the Chester Bedell Inns of Court.

He has been a faculty member of the Stetson University College of Law Employment Trial Skills Lawyers Program teaching new lawyers who handle employment cases to become effective trial advocates.

Mr. Thomas is a former President and State Chapter Co-Chair of the Florida Chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association and a member and past President of the Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Mr. Thomas is also a past member of the Executive Council of the Labor and Employment Section of the Florida Bar where he served as Chair of the Current Legal Developments Committee and Co-Chair of the Individual Rights Committee. He is also a former member of the grade review panel for the Florida Bar Labor and Employment Law Board Certification Examination.

Mr. Thomas has written articles on employment law and has presented papers and lectured extensively on employment law issues at various seminars and conferences sponsored by the National Employment Lawyers Association, The American Bar Association, The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, The Florida Bar, The Jacksonville Bar Association, Florida NELA, and various other business and professional organizations.

Mr. Thomas received his Juris Doctor degree from Stetson University College of Law in 1977, where he was a member of the Law Review.

After graduating from law school Mr. Thomas was employed as law clerk to the Honorable Paul Game, Jr., United States Magistrate Judge, Middle District

Q. my employer took advantage of Covid to term high paid long term employees, w/o any compensation, this this legal?
A: Your answer depends primarily on the employer's motive or reason for termination. For example, if it is because of the salary level, there is no law prohibiting that in Florida. On the other hand, if it is because of the employee's age, clearly that is illegal. In terms of the failure to compensate, that normally would not be required unless there is some document such as an employment contract, union agreement, or severance plan compelling payment.
