Biography

Currently I hold the position of Judge of Morgan County Superior Court 1 as appointed by Governor Eric Holcomb in December of 2022.

I am licensed under Indiana Bar and am graduate of Indiana University Maurer School of Law, 2015. I was a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office from June 2015 to January 2018. I worked in the Juvenile Division both misdemeanor and major felony, the Adult Misdemeanor Division, the Adult Mental Health Court, the Level 6 Felony Division, and then specialized with the STRIKE Team (Narcotics, Guns, and Gangs Unit). I manage a high caseload, dealing primarily with drug cases and narcotics dealing cases. I was a Public Defender in Clay and Vigo Counties from August of 2022 - January of 2023 handling major felony and Child in Need of Services cases. In 2020 I opened VanLeeuwen Law, LLC servicing southern Indiana’s litigation needs. My background is in criminal law, family law, municipal law, and estates.

I am also an I.L.E.A. graduate of the 2011 class and Officer at Indiana University Police Department from April 2010 - October of 2015.

5 Questions Answered
Q. I'm a first time offender being charged with child neglect which is a class 6 felony. Probation, jail, or felony?
A: Every case is fact specific. You should consult and retain an attorney to assess the facts of your case. The range of consequences for a Level 6 felony are defined under Indiana Code 35-50-2-7(b) the possible sentence for Level 6 felony as between six months to two years and one-half (2 1/2 ) years, in the Indiana Department of Corrections, with the advisory sentence being one (1) year and a fine up to $10,000.
Q. My husband is going to prison for 13 years. He has a court appointed lawyer that I don't believe is being fair .
A: Consult and retain a private attorney if you would like another opinion on the case.
Q. Can a person that allegedly committed a crime as a juvenile be charged with the crime 11 years later as an adult?
A: Whether or not a juvenile is tried as an adult largely depends on the charge involved, age of the juvenile at the time, and other criminal history. Just because the person is of adult age now, does not mean the case will be tried as an adult.
