- LEGAL PRACTICE Mr. Engel concentrates his law practice in general corporate and partnership law, structured finance, corporate insolvency and bankruptcy matters, creditors' rights, real estate and construction law, real estate finance, corporate bond financing, and general commercial litigation. Bankruptcy experience includes all aspects of representation of debtors and creditors in conjunction with both liquidation and reorganization proceedings. Real estate experience includes all aspects of real estate transactions and financing and related litigation. Mr. Engel has represented clients in connection with significant developments of office, industrial, commercial and multi-use projects. His trial experience includes successful defense of home improvement contractor sued by Illinois Attorney General; successful defense of importer of machine tools sued by the government of Poland; successful defense of claims asserted against of largest retailer in US. Mr. Engel has also successfully represented clients in connection with litigation involving trade secrets theft; breaches of various brokerage agreements; suits for benefits under ERISA; mechanics lien claims, numerous commercial and construction contract related suits, and numerous bankruptcy related trials. In conjunction with the structured finance aspect of Mr. Engel's practice, he has had extensive experience arranging funding for start-up and developing companies, and private placements. He has negotiated financial arrangements and work-out arrangements with numerous institutional owners and lenders including Equitable Real Estate, Inc., Metropolitan Life Insurance Company; Home Life Insurance Company; First Chicago/NBD Bank; LaSalle National Bank, American National Bank and Trust Co., and Resolution Trust Corp. Mr. Engel developed pro-forma methods for securitizing debt through a system of pooling debtors into Collateralized Debt Obligations which were then sold through European securities markets. A partial list of Mr. Engels clients includes Abbott Laboratories, Playboy Enterprises, Inc. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Heineken USA, Inc., C&V Fastener Products Co., Z Automation, Inc. BUSINESS EXPERIENCE In 1969 Mr. Engel qualified for an Ohio real estate broker's license and founded his own real estate brokerage and development firm. He has held Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois broker licenses. Mr. Engel built his company into an organization of over 150 employees with offices in three states. The scope of the company included commercial and industrial brokerage, property management, land acquisition and development, construction, and syndication. In the construction and development areas, Mr. Engel has built various type properties including single and multi-family housing, retail strip centers, industrial buildings, and warehousing. Mr. Engel has been the sponsor or general partner in numerous real estate syndications. Mr. Engel has also been a lecturer on start-up and business development for the United States Small Business Administration and has taught real estate development and finance courses at Wittenberg University.
