Donald J. Ramsell is a nationally recognized DUI defense attorney known for landmark contributions to the field over nearly four decades. He remains the only Illinois lawyer to have argued a DUI case before the United States Supreme Court.
Throughout his career, Ramsell has uncovered systemic flaws in Illinois’s breath testing programs—exposing falsified documents, software manipulation, and failures in oversight. His findings have led to statewide changes, test result suppressions, and reforms in breathalyzer certification procedures dating back to the 1980s.
Ramsell’s courtroom victories include compelling the Illinois State Police to disclose internal breath machine data and initiating state hearings on the scientific validity of field sobriety tests. His work has drawn national attention from prosecutors, judges, and legal peers.
He became the first Illinois attorney to earn Board Certification in DUI Defense under ABA standards and has been recognized as a Super Lawyer multiple times since 2005. He is a Sustaining Member of the National College for DUI Defense and has been featured by Chicago Magazine and the Chicago Sun-Times for his influence in DUI law.

- Q. If I get convicted of drunk driving, how soon can I get my drivers license back?
- A: It will be for a minimum of one year and could go on indefinitely and could take years to get your license fully reinstated. That is why I recommend you have an attorney involved immediately.
- Q. Im 20 year old female and i was taken advantage of when 13 until i was 16 and the man was 9 yrs older than me.
- A: You can still go to the police and report this. The statute of limitations for these types of actions does not run out for a long time.
- Q. I and My husband hve possible neglect charges. no charges have been filed yet.How long do we have before charges filed
- A: Yes you will need a lawyer familiar with both DCFS and the criminal courts - two different entities by the way. Do NOT give any statements to the case worker UNTIL you have hired a lawyer. This is serious.
